All that glitters is not gold: invest knowledgeably!

The UKNF has just launched a nation-wide campaign: ‘ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD: INVEST KNOWLEDGEABLY!’.

The goal is to educate the society on the workings of financial markets and to raise awareness of risk involved in investments.

Financial markets offer multiple investment opportunities. Some investments are complex and difficult to understand for most people. Investors, often inexperienced, don’t understand potential risks inherent to specific investments. They don’t always understand that investments which promise an impressive rate of return involve higher risk. Oftentimes, investors verify the firm and the products they invested in only after the transaction, that is when it’s too late and the losses have already been incurred.

Sometimes potential investors don’t know or don’t understand the role of the KNF. If they lose the funds they invested, they make a complaint to the KNF, seeking the KNF’s assistance to recover the funds.

An investment decision, especially one which involves life savings, is one of decisions with far-reaching consequences and effects determining our future, just like the decision to get married, a theme referenced in the campaign’s main video spot. Investment decisions should be made with awareness, after a careful research into the financial product concerned, into what is being purchased from whom, and into related risks.

With its campaign, the UKNF wants to get as much outreach as possible. This is why, in addition to the video spot, which is to be available on websites, social media and in public transport in eight provincial cities, the campaign also includes radio spots to be broadcast by national radio stations and articles in the nation-wide and regional press. A website was created for the purpose of the campaign at inwestujswiadomie.com.pl.

The campaign activities aim to:

  • make investors aware of the fact that every investment involves risk, and  the more attractive the investment seems, the higher the risk is;
  • encourage potential investors to diversify the risk;
  • convince the public that they should check all the information about potential investments, read it carefully, and verify the reliability of sources;
  • educate the public about the role and tasks of the KNF.
